When English praises were introduced by doubting Thomas Wyatt in the early ordinal century, his praises and those of his contemporary the Earl of Surrey were chiefly translations from the Italian of Petrarch and the French of Ronsard and others. While Wyatt introduced the praise into English, it was Surrey who gave it a rhyming meter, and a structural division into quatrains of a kind that now characterizes the common English praise. Having previously circulated in manuscripts only, both poets sonnets were first promulgated in Richard Tottels Songes and Sonnetts, better have a go at it as Tottels Miscellany (1557). The form consists of fourteen lines incorporated as three quatrains and a couplet. The third quatrain generally introduces an unannounced sharp thematic or imagistic turn; the volta. In Shakespeares sonnets, however, the volta ordinarily comes in the couplet, and usually summarizes the look of the poem or introduces a fresh new formulation at the theme. With only a rare exception, the meter is iambic pentameter, although there is some authorized metrical flexibility (e.g., lines shadiness with an extra-syllable feminine verse, or a trochaic foot before than an iamb, particularly at the starting time of a line).
